MANILA, Philippines — Jinggoy Estrada voluntarily surrendered to authorities on Monday after the Sandiganbayan issued an arrest warrant against him in connection with a non-bailable plunder case linked to alleged flood control project irregularities.
The arrest warrant was issued by the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division following charges filed by the Office of the Ombudsman involving an alleged ₱573-million kickback scheme connected to government flood control projects.
Before surrendering to members of the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), Estrada addressed the media at the Senate building and stated that he would not seek Senate protective custody while facing the allegations. He also announced that he had instructed the Senate Secretary to temporarily hold his salary while the case is ongoing.
According to reports, Estrada said he was prepared to face the legal process and defend himself in court. He continues to deny the accusations and questioned aspects of the investigation conducted against him.
The case stems from allegations that public funds intended for flood mitigation projects were improperly used through a kickback scheme involving several officials, including former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) personnel named in the complaint.
The latest development marks another major chapter in one of the country’s most closely watched corruption cases, drawing widespread public attention and renewed discussions about government accountability and anti-corruption efforts.
