The country is taking further steps in assessing emerging energy technologies as AboitizPower and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last July 31, 2026, to explore potential collaboration in the development of nuclear energy.

The agreement seeks to evaluate advanced nuclear technologies and their potential use in the Philippines to help address the country’s long-term power needs and enhance energy security. It covers joint pre-feasibility studies, technical knowledge exchange, and capacity-building initiatives to further assess the opportunities, challenges, and future potential of nuclear energy as a viable power source.

The partnership also promotes the exchange of technical knowledge and expertise with South Korea’s KHNP, which has extensive experience in nuclear power generation.

With the collaboration, AboitizPower aims to benefit from KHNP’s expertise as the Philippines continues to assess energy technologies to support its long-term electricity requirements.

The MOU supports ongoing efforts to explore long-term energy solutions for the country while emphasizing the need for comprehensive studies on safety, technical readiness, costs, environmental impact, and other key considerations before pursuing any nuclear energy project.

With electricity demand rising due to economic growth and expanding industries and communities, diversifying energy sources is seen as vital to ensuring a stable power supply. Through the MOU, AboitizPower and KHNP will continue exchanging knowledge to assess the role of nuclear energy in the country’s future energy mix, as the Philippines evaluates various technologies to strengthen long-term energy security and build a more resilient power system.
