In a recent development, representatives from BSU-IHFSA conducted a Phase 2 Monitoring and Evaluation for the enhancement of the Arabica Coffee Project in Quezon Province as a part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) and Benguet State University – Institute of Highland Farming System and Agroforestry (BSU-IHFSA).
A Farmers’ Forum was held to kickstart the first day of the activity. Beneficiary farmers shared their experiences, and observations. Questions regarding two varieties covered by the project—Mundo Novo and Red Bourbon were also raised. To address the challenges faced by coffee farmers, experts from BSU-IHFSA offered insights and technical advice on how to maintain their crops, providing them with effective recommendations and a demonstration on proper planting.
On the second day, the team conducted a field visit, along with the farmers, in areas that were already planted with Arabica coffee. They have discussed the current condition of these fields and also given them additional technical guidance and the importance of cover crops and proper fertilizer management to maintain high productivity of these crops.
Based on the preliminary results of the monitoring, the Mundo Novo variety showed the suitability to the conditions and climate in Dolores, Quezon. However, the lack of water supply had been the primary challenge that was found. This showed that it required appropriate strategies to ensure the continuous growth of the plantations.
To develop the Arabica coffee industry in the province and to bring modern technology and scientific knowledge, OPA, BSU-IHFSA and OMA-Dolores continue to strengthen their collaboration. They aim to maintain the productivity and livelihood of coffee farmers in Quezon /Angel Sabate
