On July 14, fifty-four incidents of earthquake swarm in the coast of Claveria, Masbate has been tracked by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). Residents near the coastline have been encouraged to remain attentive and alert for the warning signs of a possible tsunami.
The number was recorded from 8:52 A.M. on July 13 to 4 P.M. on July 14 as posted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Five earthquakes were felt at Intensity V on the Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale. The earthquake ranged from Magnitude 1.6 to 5.4 and occurred at depths of 1 to 45 kilometers.
“A series of earthquakes that are closely clustered in space and time, without a clearly defined pattern,” Phivolcs explained. Earthquake swarms do not have a definite mainshock and may last for days, weeks, or even longer.
They advised the people to remain attentive and alert. Practicing earthquake preparedness, such as providing emergency supply kits and remembering to duck, cover, and hold during the disaster, and tracing the fastest and safest evacuation routes were also recommended.
For those living near the coastal areas, it is important to stay cautious and aware of the warning signs of a possible local tsunami. Phivolcs said, “If you observe any of these signs, immediately move to higher ground.”
